About the Series
I grew up loving comics, or more precisely, superhero comics. I read everything else I could get my hands on, but the iconic superheroes, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, held a special place in my juvenile imagination. I was never a serious collector (my mom threw out my earliest collection, which would have been in sorry shape by now anyway), but I kept up with the superhero world as I got older, returning on occasion when a new artist or writer caught my attention. Thus I witnessed the relaunch of Superman under John Byrne and Wonder Woman’s re-imagining under George Perez and Len Wein–both times with greater attention paid to the motivations and drives of these two heroes. These more thoughtful re-imaginings of iconic but stock characters matched my own growing interest in what drove superheroes to do what they did, i.e. put on tights and a mask and give themselves funny names, all so they could pursue public careers as freelance crime-fighters and do-gooders. I even found books on the subject (I highly recommend Superheroes and Philosophy, by Tom and Matt Morris).
